2010 NFL MOCK DRAFT: The Definitive Version
With less than 12 hours until the St Louis Rams are on the clock at Number 1, it is time for me to put my money where my mouth is and give my best shot at predicting what could be a wild and wooly 1st round. This mock draft does not factor in possible trades, of which I suspect there will be a few.
1.St Louis Rams – QB Sam Bradford Oklahoma
This has turned into the consensus pick and I am not here to argue, just predict how the 1st round will play out.
2.Detroit Lions – DT Ndamakong Suh Nebraska
Once again, it's not who I would pick at this spot, but I am not the GM of the Lions.
3.Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DT Gerald McCoy Oklahoma
Maybe because it's 0724 local time, but I just realized the Big 12 has a very good shot at having the first four picks of this draft come from their conference.
4.Washington Redskins – OT Russell Okung Oklahoma State
This could also be OT Trent Williams but Okung seems to be the better of the two. I'm convinced though that if they don't trade out of the pick it will be an OT.
5.Kansas City Chiefs – OT Trent Williams Oklahoma
Again, this could be OT Bryan Bulaga but I am hearing way too many Robert Gallery comparisons to make me comfortable putting Bulaga here. Well whaddya know, 5 straight from the Big 12.
6.Seattle Seahawks – OT Bryan Bulaga Iowa
The Seahawks MUST come out of the 1st round with a franchise LT and Bulaga is the only top-tier LT left on the board.
7.Cleveland Browns – QB Jimmy Clausen Notre Dame
Oh Mike Holmgren, you sly fox. I think you've been smoke screening us. You have the credibility to take a QB and leave him on the bench for a year or two while you remake the Browns without fearing for your job.
8.Oakland Raiders – OT Bruce Campbell Maryland
For a murderderous zombie Al Davis isn't totally crazy. He does try to fill positions of need. It's just that he fills them with athletes, not necessarily football players.
9.Buffalo Bills – NT Dan Williams Tennessee
The Bills are pissed that none of the impact OTs are on the board and Jimmy Clausen is gone. So they grab a building block for an underachieving defense.
10.Jacksonville Jaguars – Derrick Morgan DE Georgia Tech
The Jags give opposing QBs time to read Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' before passing the football.
11.Denver Broncos – CB/S Earl Thomas Texas
First shock of the NFL Draft is Thomas going before Eric Berry. With two second round picks, the Broncos can afford to take their best player available.
12.Miami Dolphins – S Eric Berry Tennessee
The Dolphins laugh their asses off as no one would have thought Berry would still be on the board.
13.San Francisco 49ers – CB Joe Haden Florida
Haden instantly upgrades a secondary and makes this defense even more imposing.
14.Seattle Seahawks – RB CJ Spiller Clemson
Pete Carroll gets an electric backfield threat in the mold of his old pal Reggie Bush.
15.NY Giants – ILB Rolando Mc'Clain Alabama
The G-Men are in dire need of help in their LB corps.
16.Tennessee Titans – DE/OLB Sergio Kindle Texas
Think Redskins and Pro Bowl rookie Brian Orakpo last year. The Titans need pass rush and they have shown an affinity for ex-Longhorns (VY, Michael Griffin) in the 1st round recently.
17.San Francisco 49ers – OT Anthony Davis
The Niners do need OT help, and if they can get Davis to give a crap and play hard this could be a good pick.
18.Pittsburgh Steelers – G/C Maurkice Pouncey Florida
Assuming there is no draft day deal where Roethlisberger gets dealt with this pick factoring in, the Steelers fortify their O-Line.
19.Atlanta Falcons – DE Jason Pierre-Paul USF
Another team that has a dire need to get pressure on opposing QBs tries to remedy the problem.
20.Houston Texans – CB Kyle Wilson Boise State
The Texans have zilch at the CB position, and that is a terrible idea when you play in Peyton Manning's division.
21.Cincinnati Bengals – WR Dez Bryant Oklahoma State
Let's not kid ourselves. Cincinn-Attica has never been all that worried about character issues.
22.New England Patriots – DE Jared Odrick Penn State
The Pats piss off the Jets and Ravens by snagging the best available 5-technique, and heir to Richard Seymour right here.
23.Green Bay Packers – OLB Sean Weatherspoon Missouri
Even though the Packers' offensive line was in fact offensive last year, they take the best player available here and grab their OT in one of the next two wounds.
24.Philadelphia Eagles – G Mike Iupati Idaho
Assuming they do not deal up to try and get their hands on Earl Thomas, the Eagles grab the best pure guard in the draft.
25.Baltimore Ravens – DE Carlos Dunlap Florida
The Ravens will have no trouble getting this guy to play hard in a locker room featuring Ray Lewis, Kelly Gregg and Trevor Pryce. Remember, the knock on All-World DT Haloti Ngata coming out of college was he didn't work hard and I would say that has turned out more than ok.
26.Arizona Cardinals – DE/OLB Jerry Hughes TCU
This team is a mess and has a whole lot of needs. Rushing the passer just happens to be one of them.
27.Dallas Cowboys – S Taylor Mays USC
You would think the Boys would have learned their lesson after the Roy Williams era ended. Alas, they draft Version 2.0.
28.San Diego Chargers – RB Toby Gerhart Stanford
The Bolts really need a RB and for some reason this pick has been tickling the back of my brain for the last week or so.
29.NY Jets – CB Chris Cook Virginia
Rex Ryan marches to the beat of his own drum, and may not be willing to risk Cook going early in the second round.
30.Minnesota Vikings – QB Colt McCoy Texas
They draft Favre's replacement now, and give him to time to understudy under the 'great man' before taking the reins in a year or two. Or three. Or whenever.
31.Indianapolis Colts – OT Charles Brown USC
Imagine how good Peyton Manning's numbers would be if he once again had consistent line play in front of him.
32.New Orleans Saints – DT Brian Price UCLA
Safe to say the Saints offense doesn't need any work at this pick. Price teamed up with Sedrick Ellis could be downright scary.
